“Do I need travel insurance?”

I hear this question from many people from all walks of life, and I wonder if travelling has become so easy that it makes travellers think they may not need travel insurance.

My answer is always, “Yes you do!”

Don’t Leave Home Without Travel Insurance

Please make a note of each one of these coverages, and make sure your Policy covers everything you need.

  1. Medical Coverage: Travel insurance can provide coverage for medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and repatriation if you become injured or ill during your trip.
  2. Trip Cancellation Coverage: If you need to cancel your trip due to some unforeseen circumstances, travel insurance can help you recover losses associated with the cancellation of your trip.
  3. Trip Interruption Coverage: If you need to cut your trip short due to an emergency, travel insurance can help you recover the unused portion of your trip.
  4. Baggage Coverage: If your baggage is lost, stolen or damaged while traveling, your travel insurance can help cover the cost of replacing your items.
  5. Flight Delay Coverage: If you experience a flight delay due to an unexpected event, travel insurance can help cover the cost of extra accommodation and meals.
  6. Financial Protection: Travel insurance can provide financial protection in the event of a natural disaster, terrorism, or other unexpected event that disrupts your travel plans.
  7. 24/7 Assistance: Travel insurance can provide you with access to 24/7 customer service and support, as well as legal and medical advice.
  8. Pre-Existing Condition Coverage: Travel insurance can provide coverage for pre-existing conditions.
  9. Rental Car Damage Coverage: If you are renting a car while on your trip, travel insurance can help cover the cost of any damages that may occur during your rental period.
  10. Travel Delay Coverage: If your travel plans are disrupted due to an unexpected event, travel insurance can help cover the cost of additional accommodations and meals.

Be prepared

I’ve done lots of travelling and have only needed to use my travel insurance when I was robbed in Italy (many years ago), but everything was covered.

Over the years I have had other friends who had heart attacks and accidents and needed hospitalisation in foreign lands … where a day in hospital can cost $1,000.00.

Quite a few years back a friend of mine forgot to sign all his paperwork before he took off on his extended trip. He was involved in a car accident at the beginning of his journey, landing him in hospital for almost a month with many broken bones.

No, he wasn’t covered by insurance – this was before the internet and he didn’t sign the travel insurance policy before his departure.

For a relatively small amount of money, you can put your mind at ease on so many levels … as I always do.

I’ve been travelling the world since 1980 and have ALWAYS made sure I organise travel insurance before I leave home.

If I’m taking a trip which will cost me a couple of thousand dollars, spending around $100-150 on travel insurance for a month of travelling is a sum I’m happy to pay.

Travel insurance is essential – never leave home without it :-)
