What can I do in Paris in November?

Category: Q and A

I will be visiting Paris for a week at the end of November 2009 and am interested in learning what I can expect at this time of year in terms of weather, things to do, how to get around, and have a slight concern that I do not speak French.

Cheers!

Answer to : What can I do in Paris in November?

Hi Sherry,

Thanks for visiting my website. A week in November? What fun you'll have!

There are always so many things to do in Paris, and I'll provide a couple links here to other parts of this website with some options:

So many things to do in Paris, not enough time

November is a time for autumn/fall festivals - the Salon du Chocolat at the end of October, or the huge Marjolaine crafts fair at the Bois de Vincennes, with outdoor stands featuring organic specialties and wines, has an environmental feel to it. On the third Thursday of November, Paris celebrates the annual arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau - the 'New Beaujolais' wine; visit cafes, wine bars and restaurants to taste the new vintage - Parisians love tasting theBeaujolais Nouveau, and you're bound to get to talk so some locals whilst doing so.

Perhaps you'd like to go shopping in Printemps store and then enjoy their Happy Hour?

You may also like to go to a French movie with sub-titles, stroll along the famous avenues, visit the fabric district of Montmartre, join me for a week of silk painting, do a cooking class, enjoy a wine tasting ... or keep warm by taking a free walking tour.

You also need to be aware of a very small number of unscrupulous cafes who try to overcharge. Reading this in advance is a good idea.

Some of my favourite things to do? Barge cruise on the River Seine, meet the locals, attend a cocktail or dinner evening (called a soirée) in someone's home, people-watching in caf´s as I savor a hot chocolate or a strong coffee, visit museums (here is a list of free museums) and so many more activities - it's quite a long list :-)

The weather in November in Paris

The weather will be brisk and cold, it's almost mid-winter in November:

  • Minimum temperature: 5 degrees C (41 degrees F)
  • Maximum temperature: 10 degrees C (50 degrees F)
  • Average temperature: 6 degrees C (42.8 degrees F)
  • Average rainfall: 54 millimeters (2.1 inches)

As for what to pack:

  • November in Paris can be rainy and chilly, with low temperatures approaching freezing on some days. There may also be a wind chill to consider.
  • There are fewer daylight hours and you'll need to pack plenty of sweaters, scarves, coats, and warm socks.
  • Gloves are essential - I usually have leather ones for rainy days and woollen ones for fine days.
  • No matter what time of year it is, I always carry a fold-up umbrella, and in November you should definitely have some kind of waterproof coat or jacket (with a hood) - you'll really need this in the wet season.

Speaking French

These days you can get by quite easily in Paris without speaking French. Twenty years ago was a different story, but now just about everyone will be able to speak some English - this won't be a problem at all.  If you'd like to practice a bit of French before you go, it's always a good idea to learn the basics -hello, goodbye, thank you etc.

Visit these pages and listen to the simple French phrases I've created - hope this helps:
