4. Auvers-Sur-Oise

Before you visit the Musee d'Orsee in Paris, spend a day in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise where you'll learn all about impressionist paintings, and in particular, Vincent van Gogh.  This is also Vincent's final resting ground.

Travel time:  about 60 minute4s from Paris, start at Gare St Lazare, then change at metro Pontoise (or start at Gare du Nord, changing at Valmondois) - http://www.auvers-sur-oise.com

5. Fontainbleau

What a marvellous chateau - it used to be the home of Napleon Bonaparte, and over the centuries different kings (les Rois) have added their own personal touches showing many different architectural styles throughout the ages. If you're a Napoleon buff, this is a day trip you can't miss.

6. Maisons-Laffitte

If you're interested in horse racing, then the history of Maisons-Laffitte property will fascinate you. When Marie Antoinette's brother-in-law purchased the beautiful home and stables, he introduced horse racing to the French. In 1818 the property was turned into a small town, and is a weekend favourite of the Parisians.
